President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) to spearhead the coordination of Nigeria’s artificial intelligence (AI) and digital transformation efforts in collaboration with the private sector.

The directive was issued during Tinubu’s meeting with Google CEO Sundar Pichai in Paris, France, where discussions centered on forging a strategic partnership to enhance Nigeria’s technological landscape. The Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy will provide strategic oversight, while NITDA will take the lead in driving implementation.

According to a statement by Presidential Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu emphasized Nigeria’s commitment to becoming a global technology hub and creating a business-friendly environment to attract leading tech investments. He also commended Google’s ongoing contributions to the nation’s digital economy and its role in opening new opportunities for businesses and young talent.

Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, described the partnership with Google as a major step toward accelerating technological progress and strengthening Nigeria’s digital ecosystem. He reiterated the country’s dedication to leveraging AI and digital transformation for tangible benefits to businesses and citizens.

Pichai, reaffirming Google’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s digital ambitions, stated, “Nigeria has an incredible opportunity to lead in AI and digital innovation in Africa. Google is excited to continue working with the Nigerian government to create an ecosystem that fosters innovation and economic growth.”

The partnership between Nigeria and Google signals a significant push towards AI development, digital infrastructure expansion, and economic growth, positioning the country as a leader in Africa’s technology revolution.
