Nigerian Government Calls for Collaboration to Address Climate Change Impacts in Workplace
In a bid to tackle the adverse effects of climate change on workplace safety and health, the Nigerian government has urged stakeholders to collaborate on innovative solutions. This call was made during a symposium held in Abuja, Nigeria, to commemorate the World Day for Safety and Health at Work 2024.
Addressing stakeholders at the event, the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, Ismaila Abubakar, emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing climate change challenges in collaboration with stakeholders across all sectors. He stressed the urgent need to develop proactive strategies to mitigate risks and protect workers amidst global warming.
“The impact of climate change on the world of work underscores the imperative to address the complex interplay between environmental sustainability and workplace safety,” stated Abubakar.
He highlighted the cardinal objectives of the symposium, which include identifying, analyzing, and evaluating the impact of climate change in the workplace, as well as updating information to align with transformational changes experienced in the world of work.
Furthermore, Alhaji Abubakar urged participants to reflect on the theme of this year’s celebration, “The Impact of Climate Change on Workers’ Health and Safety,” and take necessary measures to address the situation collectively.
According to a newly published report by the International Labour Organization (ILO), over 70% of the global workforce is likely to face occupational hazards linked to climate change. These hazards include excessive heat, dangerous UV radiation, and harmful air pollution.
In her message, ILO Country Director, Dr. Vanessa Phala, highlighted the range of dangerous health conditions linked to climate change, such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, and respiratory illnesses. She emphasized the need for adaptive responses to protect the workforce.
Dr. Phala commended Nigeria for proactive measures taken to address safety and health issues in the workplace, including the ratification of ILO Conventions 155 and 187.
The event, which featured a road show and medical outreach, aimed to raise awareness and sensitization on the need for safe and healthy working environments. It underscores the importance of collaborative efforts to address climate change impacts in the workplace.
