The Humanitarian Leaders Network (HLN) Youth Wing has successfully held its maiden youth event, bringing together young leaders, changemakers, and advocates on August 23, 2025, to mark International Youth Day.
The gathering, which was held online, carried the theme “Local Youth Actions for the SDGs and Beyond.” It highlighted the critical role of young people in advancing sustainable development and driving positive change within their communities.
The virtual event created a platform for young voices across Africa and the diaspora to connect, share ideas, and present innovative solutions to local challenges while aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It featured keynote addresses, panel discussions, and breakout sessions that focused on issues such as climate change, unemployment, education, gender equality, and community development.
Founder and Global President of HLN, Shirley Murphy, praised the energy and determination of the youth in her opening remarks.
“Our vision is to raise a new generation of humanitarian leaders who understand that global impact begins with local action. The energy and creativity demonstrated today show that our young people are not just the future , they are the present force for transformation,” Murphy said.
Africa Youth President of HLN, Amb. Sukeji Modi, emphasized that youth involvement is central to achieving the SDGs.
“Local action is not optional, it is essential. If we want sustainable progress in Africa and beyond, it has to begin with the youth at the grassroots,” Modi said.
National President of HLN Nigeria, Amb. Winifred Sunday, also encouraged young participants to be intentional in overcoming barriers and creating impact despite environmental and societal challenges.
“This is a call for our young people to lead from where they are, to transform obstacles into opportunities, and to become the drivers of the change their communities need,” she remarked.
One participant, speaking on behalf of the youth, echoed the sentiments of empowerment.
“This platform has given us the confidence to believe that we can make a difference starting from our immediate environment. Local action is the foundation of sustainable global progress.”
The HLN Youth Wing reaffirmed its commitment to mentoring, equipping, and mobilizing young people across Africa and the diaspora, stressing that young leaders must take ownership of their communities’ growth while collaborating toward inclusive development.
The organization expressed gratitude to its partners, ambassadors, and all participants whose support made the event a success, while announcing that follow-up initiatives are already in motion to sustain the momentum generated by the youth gathering.
