The Humanitarian Leaders Network (HLN) has issued an urgent appeal in response to the escalating humanitarian crisis in Maiduguri, where severe flooding has displaced over 200,000 people. The disaster was triggered by the collapse of the Alau Dam, which caused widespread flooding throughout the state capital, affecting critical areas such as the historic Monday Market, the Palace of the Shehu of Borno, and neighborhoods including Shehuri, Gwange, and Gamboru. As floodwaters continue to spread, countless residents are desperately searching for missing loved ones, underscoring the urgent need for a coordinated emergency response.
According to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), over 200,000 people have been displaced, with an unknown number of individuals, including children, still missing. Thousands of families are now sheltering in overcrowded camps, makeshift shelters, and public buildings, where they face limited access to clean water, food, and sanitation. The floods have also caused significant damage to infrastructure, disrupted road networks, and made it challenging for aid organizations to deliver essential supplies and services to those in desperate need.
In a press release signed by Shirley Murphy, the Global President of the Humanitarian Leaders Network, HLN calls on the Nigerian government, international donors, and humanitarian organizations to prioritize the immediate needs of those affected by the flooding. Murphy emphasizes the need for enhanced collaboration and coordination among all stakeholders to ensure a rapid and effective response to this unfolding crisis.
“We call on the international community to act swiftly and provide additional support and resources to prevent further loss of life and suffering,” Murphy stated.
Many of the displaced are already among the most vulnerable populations, including women, children, and the elderly, who face an increased risk of diseases such as cholera, malaria, and other waterborne illnesses. The lack of adequate shelter and sanitation facilities is exacerbating these risks, creating a looming public health crisis.
The Humanitarian Leaders Network urges immediate and decisive action to address the needs of those affected by the floods and to mitigate the long-term impact of this disaster on the people of Maiduguri.
